WLFI <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/trump-s-world-liberty-bought-20-m-worth-of-crypto-ahead-of-summit\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">purchased $20 million of various tokens<\/a> ahead of the March 7 White House Crypto Summit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As World Liberty Financial\u2019s portfolio grows and regulator oversight disappears from the crypto industry, observers and legal scholars are becoming increasingly concerned over conflicts of interest within the Trump administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Trump\u2019s USD1 stablecoin deepens concerns over conflicts of interest\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-03\/01956d34-6284-7c38-87e8-7fd9f4c6aa99\" title=\"\" \/><figcaption>\n<p><em>Son Eric Trump pumps his father\u2019s memecoin ahead of the inauguration. Source: <\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricTrump\/status\/1880670273768435759\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\"><em>Eric Trump<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Trump\u2019s stablecoin USD1 riddled with liabilities\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>WLFI <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20250325773694\/en\/World-Liberty-Financial-Plans-to-Launch-USD1-the-Institutional-Ready-Stablecoin\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">announced<\/a> on March 25 that it will launch the new stablecoin USD1, \u201c100% backed by short-term US government treasuries, US dollar deposits, and other cash equivalents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WLFI co-founder Zach Witkoff said in the announcement that the coin can be used for \u201cseamless, secure cross-border transactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>News of USD1\u2019s forthcoming release came just days after WLFI <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/world-liberty-financial-token-sales-550-million\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">secured more than $500 million<\/a> through the sale of its own $WLFI tokens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Observers have already begun to raise the alarm about the possible security risks posed by a stablecoin connected to the president. There are also concerns over the possibility of market manipulation and violations of the emoluments clause of the US Constitution \u2014 a section of the document that protects against undue influence over American leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As regards the latter, cyber and digital media attorney Andrew Rossow told Cointelegraph that the stablecoin is \u201ca direct affront to constitutional safeguards meant to prevent conflicts of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Trump and his family controlling 60% of World Liberty\u2019s equity interests, the USD1 stablecoin could facilitate indirect financial gains or undue foreign influence over US policy, particularly if foreign entities invest in or use the stablecoin.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-03\/0195d2ea-c52d-7cd0-97af-d0c37c50e23a\" title=\"\" alt=\"Trump\u2019s USD1 stablecoin deepens concerns over conflicts of interest\" \/><figcaption>\n<p><em>WLFI makes up a sizeable chuck of Trump\u2019s estimated net worth. Source: <\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/25\/trump-cyrpto-net-worth-real-estate-truth-social\/\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/25\/trump-cyrpto-net-worth-real-estate-truth-social\/\"><em>Fortune<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Corey Frayer, who worked on crypto policy at the SEC under former President Joe Biden, said that the project\u2019s emphasis on cross-border payments was particularly worrisome and that foreign entities may invest as a way to gain favor with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of opacity around this marketplace, and prior relationships with illicit finance,\u201d Frayer <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/25\/technology\/trump-crypto-stablecoin.html\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">told<\/a> The New York Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>US policymakers have already noted the possibility for foreign influence following the launch of Trump\u2019s eponymous memecoin in January.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Democratic Representative Maxine Waters \u2014 a top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee \u2014 <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=412812#:~:text=Anyone%20globally%2C%20even%20individuals%20who,TRUMP%20through%20various%20unregulated%20platforms.\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">wrote<\/a> that \u201cAnyone globally, even individuals who have been sanctioned by the U.S. or banned from our capital markets, can now trade and profit off of $TRUMP through various unregulated platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/congress-repealed-irs-broker-rule-regulate-defi\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/congress-repealed-irs-broker-rule-regulate-defi\"><em><strong>Congress repealed the IRS broker rule, but can it regulate DeFi?<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to potential foreign influence, observers are concerned that Trump\u2019s crypto ventures could threaten market stability and integrity, and open up global markets to manipulation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Referencing USD1, Heath Mayo \u2014 the founder of the Trump-alternative conservative movement Principles First \u2014 <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HeathMayo\/status\/1904574611963937105\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">said<\/a> that a sitting president issuing an instrument backed by public debt should be illegal, adding that the project had \u201cterrible incentives and corrupt use of US taxpayer credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rossow said that the president\u2019s role in a stablecoin project while at the same time working to craft stablecoin legislation in the form of the GENIUS Act is \u201ca constitutional violation that could destabilize regulatory integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s influence over the industry and ability to drop enforcement actions against crypto executives who support him creates \u201can uneven playing field, disadvantaging competitors and violating principles of equal protection under the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What options do regulators have regarding Trump\u2019s crypto conflicts of interest<\/h2>\n<p>Trump, who has long stated an affinity with former President Andrew Jackson, seems to be <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/can-law-keep-up-musk-doge\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">holding to the latter\u2019s strategy<\/a> of acknowledging judicial rulings \u2014 and then doing what he wants regardless.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The presidential administration has already shown that it is willing to defy orders from federal judges when, earlier this month, it <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/trump-admin-ignores-judges-order-bring-deportation-planes\/story?id=119857181\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">ignored<\/a> a verbal order from a federal judge to turn around two planes full of alleged gang members bound for the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Regarding crypto, Senator Elizabeth Warren has already <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/elizabeth-warren-ethics-probe-trump-crypto\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" title=\"null\">called for an ethics probe into Trump\u2019s crypto activities<\/a>. She said that the president\u2019s memecoin \u201cmassively enriched Trump personally, enabled a mechanism for the crypto industry to funnel cash to him, and created a volatile financial asset that allows anyone in the world to financially speculate on Trump\u2019s political fortunes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Trump\u2019s USD1 stablecoin deepens concerns over conflicts of interest\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-03\/0195d2ec-154f-79ab-9a36-216254a88a8f\" title=\"\" \/><figcaption>\n<p><em>Warren, a long-time crypto critic, has taken aim at WLFI.
